The Gulf 12 Hours organising team is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ian Barnwell, a widely respected figure in motorsport.

From the very first edition of the Gulf 12 Hours, Ian contributed to the success of our event as one of the most dedicated and influential logistics specialists. His passion for motorsport and unwavering belief in the Gulf 12 Hours transcended professional commitments — Ian was a true advocate for the event, championing it at every opportunity.

Ian Barnwell’s remarkable career in motorsport began in freight logistics during the iconic Group C sportscar era. With his expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, he established thriving businesses and eventually launched his own race team, where Richard Dean (pictured) became his first-ever driver.

Beyond his achievements in logistics and team management, Ian’s love for motorsport was evident in his generous sponsorship of drivers and support for numerous racing teams. His dedication and contribution to the sport were immense, earning him admiration and gratitude across the motorsport community.

Sadly, Ian passed away in Abu Dhabi while hospitalised during the 2024 Gulf 12 Hours, following an illness that first emerged during the prior week’s event in Sepang. His loss will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him in the world of motorsport.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family, friends, and the entire motorsport community during this difficult time. His legacy within motorsport, both as a professional and as a passionate supporter of the sport, will be remembered for years to come.
